Shame as Police Shut Enugu Churches As Pastors, Supporters of Both Churches Trade Blows.
Enugu—It was a show of shame, yesterday, in Enugu as two pastors and their loyalists engaged themselves in fisticuffs at Mount Street Parish of Assemblies of God Church, Nigeria.
Consequently, police was compelled to lock up the church premises.
Vanguard gathered that the church was turned into a battle field, yesterday morning, as two pastors and their supporters fought over who should take control of the parish.
Crisis of factionalisation of the Assemblies of God Church had been lingering for more than three years as two persons, Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi Okoroafor, are each laying claims to the leadership of the church, a position known as General Superintendent, a matter that is currently before the Supreme Court.
The drama started when one of the pastors, Rev. Nathaniel Udeze, came with letters of posting and other court documents as part of preparations to be installed as the new pastor at the parish.
He was promptly resisted upon arrival with his team of supporters.
Leading the opposition was current resident pastor of the parish, Reverend Amaechi Agbo, who along with his supporters, also vowed not to allow Pastor Udeze take over, accusing him of being an “intruder.”
The incoming pastor Udeze, said to have been very furious, insisted that he had been officially posted there by the leadership of the church under Rev. Paul Emeka.
He also insisted that Rev. Agbo had been transferred to another parish since May 2015.
Howver, Rev Agbo disagreed, insisting that he was still in-charge of the parish as he was yet to be formally written by Rev. Okoroafor’s leadership of the church, which he recognised.
Factional Sunday School
Trouble started as early as 7a.m., when supporters of both pastors arrived and started sharing different versions of Sunday school manual in preparation for the main service.
When the factional pastors arrived, the situation broke down completely as the pastors started shoving each other and shortly afterwards, members of the two factions engaged in fisticuffs.
Divisional Police Officer, Dennis Ayara, who later arrived the scene, made frantic efforts to bring the situation under control through negotiation, but to no avail.
The police, therefore, cordoned off the church and put it under lock, while the leaders of the two factions were asked to report to the station.

After the hit,,one of the girls was found lying on the road while the girl who was hit first was found in the bush close to the Road side and they were both rushed to the hospital.
An I.D Card found in one of the girl's Bag indicated she was a 200 level student of philosophy while the details of the other cannot be confirmed yet.

Different reactions have rolled in on the danger of that express road just in front of the school. Separating an off-campus from the school gate.
Here is what the ex-secretary general of the SUG,,precious erhiabo had to say about the situation.
"It hurts
The solution is this, we take up diggers and shovel to that road tomorrow, no one will tell the government to take over and either construct a flyover or make speed break.
The SUG can take this up tomorrow being a public holiday. We all should be there because volunteers are needed too.
Rest in peace to one of ours, it could have been you or me."

Subsidy removal won’t hurt Nigerians — Prof. Pat Utomi
Professor of political economy, Pat Utomi, tells TOBI AWORINDE that there are cabals who are benefitting massively from the Federal Government’s subsidy on petroleum products
Is it a must for the Federal Government to remove fuel subsidy?
I think fuel subsidy is a source of enormous haemorrhage from the federal treasury; a haemorrhage that is benefitting a few people — scam artists. And the marginal delivery of value to the Nigerian people is questionable because, in most places in Nigeria, we are not getting people to pay those (official) prices anyway. In essence, I am not sure we can justify what is going into it, whereas you could take the same resources to do a lot to transform the economy, and maybe invest in an environment that would create more jobs, etc. But if I were to do it, and I could, I would find a way of taking a portion of that money and paying directly via a cash transfer to the poorest of the poor so that they can use it to buy their own fuel as they see fit or subsidise their transport. The big problem is that we have chosen not to have a proper headcount or biometric data of citizens, in spite of national identity cards and programmes like that.
Indonesia just went through a similar process of removing huge subsidies. That was the first thing that the current president, Joko Widodo, did after he was elected. And there cannot be a more masses-oriented leader than him, who is basically a small guy from a small business that rode his bicycle around and so on. He is a man of the masses, yet he realised that it was important to remove the subsidy. However, they were able, with the support of some international aid agencies, to pay money directly to the poorest of the poor. In our place, a similar strategy could be thought of. Unfortunately, we still have this challenge of ‘Where are the people? Who are the people?’ before we know it, some agents will go and share these monies and pocket them like the scammers in the oil industry are doing.
But it is widely believed that fuel subsidy removal will be an enormous burden on the majority of Nigerians. Is this true?
In many parts of Nigeria, if you make sure that there is availability of the product and so forth, the competition can only force prices down. The reason that people are comfortable with what they (marketers) are doing now is because there is a quasi-monopoly — an oligopoly of sorts — which is taking advantage of the ordinary citizen. But if there is competition, as you saw in telecommunications, we are going to get to a scenario where, in a short period of time, prices will drop from competition. I do believe that the net effect over a short period of time will not be higher prices, I am almost confident of that. In fact, around December last year, when prices dropped to the upper 40s (in dollars), if we had removed it (subsidy) and encouraged competition and refused to give licences without ensuring that the quality was right, prices would have to be forced down. They would have come down significantly from where they are now, if the government had given such an order.
I was in the United States last December on New Year’s Eve, when I was driving to catch a flight from the Midwest to New York. I remember that my host was shocked, positively, that petrol prices had fallen below $2 (per gallon). The price used to be about $5; it suddenly dropped to a mere $2 a gallon (about 4.5 litres). Basically, the same should happen here in the oil industry, just like it happened with per-second billing and general pricing of the telecommunications business.
The Nigeria Labour Congress, during the fuel scarcity in May that lasted for about two weeks and nearly crippled the country’s economy, warned that there was a conspiracy to remove subsidy on fuel and this could plunge the nation into crisis. What do you think?
That is absolutely incorrect. I think we like to get ourselves into these strange debates (based on) personal interests. Those who are benefitting from these subsidies are the ones pushing all kinds of people to create these kinds of arguments that they are profiting from; it is not true. People have been paying N150 and waiting in queues for hours; then you tell the person that if you remove subsidy, prices would be very high. It is not true. Simple logic shows that it cannot be that high. But so long as we ensure that there is competition, it will get lower than today’s prices, if crude (oil) prices are not going up.
Are you saying the oil marketers are the ones to blame for this disinformation?
There is no question in my mind that they are a part of it. Not all of them; there are different kinds of players in every market. You can’t paint everybody with the same brush. But there is no question that there are people who are making out like bandits and the first rule of change is that those who profit from the old order will do everything to prevent a new order from coming about.
Members in both chambers of the National Assembly had moved motions to remove fuel subsidy during the recent fuel scarcity, but the motions were voted against. Do you think the fuel subsidy removal plan can get past the lawmakers, seeing as they are obviously against it?
I am not sure where the laws of our country say that the National Assembly has to vote on the price of Bournvita, and fuel is just as much a product as Bournvita. Why should the National Assembly get involved in the price of any product, even petrol? We have had some people during the course of our history who dabbled into such things and that is part of what has caused some of our problems today. I don’t know what the National Assembly has to do with whether or not fuel subsidy should be removed.
Why are fuel scarcity and the consequent hike in prices of petroleum products so common in Nigeria nowadays?
Precisely, it is because it profits some people. Why is it not common in next-door Benin Republic, which is poorer and does not produce crude oil? Why do they not have queues (at fuel stations)?
What do you think the Federal Government should do with the resources, if fuel subsidy is removed?
This business of what it (proceeds from subsidy removal) will be used for is what is creating all these problems. The whole country is a basket. There are leakages from everywhere. Whatever government exists to do for its people, the government should do it and revenues that come to the government, whether from taxes or from royalties, should go into serving the people to improve the quality of their lives. It should go into providing infrastructure, ensuring that there is adequate regulation to enable businesses to grow and provide jobs for people. All of those things are part of what the government should do.
Looking at the inability of some states to pay the salaries of their workers, what do you think is the best option for the Federal Government to take?
I think that we need to first review and rethink our fiscal federalism. I think that the time has come to have some very clear conditionality attached to the receipt of revenues, especially debt management revenues. And what we should do in that regard is ensure better behaviour so that we do not get into this situation again.

Lionel Messi Set To Go On Trial For Tax Evasion
Legendary Football Star Lionel Messi is to go on trial on a charge of tax evasion after a magistrate on Friday dismissed an earlier appeal from the player which claimed he was unaware of the financial dealings of his father.
It is alleged that Messi's image rights were sold by his agent and father Jorge — who assumed full responsibility when the case began — using companies in countries like Belize and Uruguay to avoid Spanish tax obligations.
Messi has claimed he left all his business interests to his father and his management team but a judge in July stated "there was sufficient evidence" that Messi "could have known about and consented to the creation and maintaining of a fictitious financial structure".
Messi's appeal, heard on Friday in Gava, near Barcelona, was rejected.

UNIBEN VC in Good Health.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Universities, National Association of Academic Technologists and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, UNIBEN branch, on Monday said that the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Godwin Oshodin, “is hale and heart” and has resumed office.
While briefing newsmen in Benin, the three unions condemned what they described as “mischievous, wicked” and “selfish” reports peddled by “detractors,” over the absence of the VC, who was flown abroad for medical attention.
According to the unions, the detractors had claimed that there had been “so much anxiety in the air within the University of Benin community” over the absence of the VC on medical treatment abroad and that his absence had slowed down activities in the institution.
It would be recalled that Professor Oshodin was flown abroad for medical treatment due to ill health in May.
However, the unions, in a statement signed by their chairmen, said,”It is sad to note how the pursuit of selfish interest could drive some persons to the point of losing sight of the uniqueness of the university system, whose operations are largely guided by the rule of law.”
They stated that in spite of the VC’s absence, the university had resumed for the second semester, which began August 11. It also hosted over 2,000 athletes and officials, who participated in the 11th edition of the Nigerian Universities Staff Sports Association Games, they said. They also said the process for the promotion of all categories of staff was ongoing.
“We advise those calling for the appointment of an acting Vice-Chancellor to check the statutes for their own good.Anyway, we are delighted to make it known that Professor O. G. Oshodin (JP), our amiable Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, is hale and hearty; he resumed duty on Monday.”

Yet Another Car Repossessed From Sean Kingston
So far Sean Kingston has made it a repo hat trick because on Sunday night in Hollywood, he got a third car repossessed.
Kingston's white Lamborghini was parked near the intersection of Hollywood and Vine until it was lifted up on a flatbed and towed away. The Lambo was a lease and Sean hadn't made payments for 6 months.
This has happened to Kingston not once, but twice in the last few months. On March 26, Kingston had his Bentley repo'd outside a swanky Hollywood hotel while he was inside. A huge fight broke out when his boys tried to stop it but the car was towed away nonetheless. The week before that, his Mercedes Benz G-Class SUV met the same fate after he fell three months behind on the payments.

Happy Eid el-Fitri To Muslims All Over The World
THE Ramadan has ended. Its required compliance to abstain from food and water are some of the easily remembered aspects of the month-long observation, which is one of the five pillars of the Islam faith.
The blessings of the month of spiritual elevation are for those who are faithful to its tenets. For the individual, it is a month of re-awakening, a time to reflect on the understanding of the person’s life and its purpose.
Many during this period aspire to improve their spirituality. The tougher challenge is to retain it. A better relationship with the Almighty would translate to a better appreciation of life, care for others, their positions on issues, and even their belief.
Islam is a peaceful religion and would not support killings, whether before, during or after Ramadan. Attacks in different parts of the North killed more than 200 people during Ramadan. These attacks negate the peace associated with Islam, especially during Ramadan.
Individual appreciation of Ramadan, across religions, decides convictions, which determine how people act in their relation with the Almighty, and their fellow man.
The piety of Ramadan is a reminder of the peaceful relations we should have with each other in obedience to the Almighty Allah, the fountain of peace.
Happy Eid el-Fitri to our readers. May the blessings of Ramadan endure.

List Of Top Ten Richest African Musicians 2014. "Not Your Regular Forbes List"
In the recent past, it has become something of a sport for various organisations to come up with list of richest entertainers, using various parameters most convenient to them. More often than not, their publications are either greeted with disbelief, outrage and even scorn by readers and sometimes even the featured artist(s). There has never been a time a published list of the richest African musicians was welcomed with widespread acceptability.
Even when Channel O and Forbes came up with a top ten list of richest African musicians, presumably using factors such as endorsement value, popularity, show rates, sales, awards, YouTube views, appearance in newspapers, investment, social media presense, influence and so many other factors, many people still did not believe they got it spot on.
However, just recently an African online magazine known as Answers Africa has done its own findings, using pretty much the same parameters as Forbes and here is what they came up with. Compare it with Forbes list and see which one is nearer the mark:
1. Youssou N’dour: The legendary Senegalese singer born in 1959 tops the list. He is said to own biggest media houses in Senegal, including radio and TV stations. He has served as Senegalese cultural ambassador and culture minister . Note; not on Forbes list.

3. D’Banj: The Koko master who has now gone in deep into entrepreneurship is rated third richest in Africa. He charges over 100 thousand dollars per show and he is said to have a house in Atlanta, Georgia, USA worth more than 1.5M dollars. Note: Forbes rated him fourth in Africa

Recent Study finds promise toward treating HIV and hepetitis C
(AFP) – A new hepatitis C drug has shown early promise in patients whose infection with both HIV and hepatitis C has made them traditionally difficult to treat, said a study Saturday.
Patients were given Gilead Sciences’ sofosbuvir, a drug approved for the US market in 2013 that has stirred controversy due to its high price tag — about $1,000 per pill, along with another well-known drug, ribavirin.
The study in the Journal of the American Medical Association’s (JAMA) July 23/30 issue included just over 220 people who were treated for either 12 or 24 weeks.
Most of the patients — between 67 percent and 94 percent depending on the type of hepatitis C they had and whether they had ever been treated for it before — saw their liver disease disappear and stay away for 12 weeks after they stopped treatment.
The measurement scientists used was known as sustained virologic response (SVR), or what is clinically considered a “cure” of hepatitis C, a serious and often chronic liver disease.
The study ended 12-weeks after treatment ended, so responses beyond that point are unknown.
As many as seven million people worldwide are infected with both human immunodeficiency virus and hepatitis C, according to background information in the article.
Treating both infections is difficult because patients have needed to use interferon for hepatitis C, which interacts poorly with antiretroviral drugs for HIV suppression.
Seven of the 223 in this study discontinued the treatment because of adverse events, most commonly fatigue, insomnia, headache, and nausea.
Researchers noted that the study was not the most rigorous kind. Doctors knew what they were prescribing to patients, and the participants were not randomized to a comparison treatment or placebo.
However, patients “had high rates of sustained HCV virologic response 12 weeks after cessation of therapy,” said the study led by Mark Sulkowski of Johns Hopkins University.
“Further studies of this regimen in more diverse populations of coinfected patients are needed.”
An accompanying editorial by Michael Saag of the University of Alabama School of Medicine said the drug combination is a “quantum leap forward” in treatment but that its cost remains too high for widespread use.
“When combined with ribavirin, the average wholesale price of a 12-week course of treatment is $94,500 and $189,000 for a 24-week course,” he wrote.
“The world simply cannot afford to pay on a ‘cost per cure’ basis,” he added.
“Hopefully, competition among the new products coming to market in the next 18 months will result in substantially lower pricing for the drugs.”
